Fight Flight or Freeze

The fight flight or freeze response is a built-in survival mechanism that automatically prepares the body to react when faced with danger, fear, or intense emotional stress. When the brain perceives a threat, the nervous system quickly releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, increasing heart rate, sharpening awareness, and preparing muscles for immediate action. Depending on the situation, a person may instinctively confront the threat through the fight response, attempt to escape through the flight response, or temporarily become unable to react through the freeze response while evaluating the circumstances. These reactions occur automatically and can be triggered by emergencies, workplace stress, interpersonal conflicts, traumatic experiences, or unexpected life events. Understanding fight flight or freeze helps individuals recognize that these responses are natural biological processes rather than personal weaknesses. This awareness can support healthier emotional regulation through mindfulness, counseling, and stress management practices.
