Yes, I was a technician in the 4017th CCTS from Dec 63-Jun 67. I operated and maintained the KC-135 Flight Simulators. We had 3 KC-135 simulators at Castle and 3 mobile Flight Simulators mounted in converted Pullman rail cars that serviced 3-4 bases each and covered the west coast and the northern states as far east as Grand Forks ND and Omaha NE.

Yes, all the great guys I worked with in Building 1333. Flying the KC-135 simulators (to test them) and getting a ride in a KC-135 out of Mather AFB that was practicing steep turns over Nevada. Weekends in Yosemite, the base theater, Merced, and the almond orchards.

Do you have any memories/comments?

Visited museum in May during our california tour (three days before open cockpit day (aaarghhh!!!)) and it was awesome!!! Don't want to say anything bad about other museums but this combination of aircrafts here at Castle is special, there is plenty of space for each one, beautifully arranged and in really good shape. Museum, cafeteria and landscape were attractive enough to keep my absolutely uninterested wife in a good mood. People here were so kind, I don't know if or when we come back to another visit, but believe me, I'll do my best to make it happen!

Were you stationed at Castle?

No, I was born there in 1951.

Do you have any memories/comments?

My birth at Castel occurred because my mom was staying with her parents in Merced while my dad was in Korea. Because my dad was an officer in the US military allowed my mom to have me at Castle virtually for free. Seems like I cost nine dollars and change.

I remember visiting my grandparents in Merced in '56-'57 and watching B-36's and B-52's fly overhead. Sometimes the B-52's would be trailing drag chutes.

What is your favourite aircraft here?

F100

Were you stationed at Castle?

No; I'm a WWII vet of the 10th Mtn. Division, served in Colorado, Texas and Italy. But, I was working in Merced in 1950, had a rented room in the south part of town, and often early morning flights of B50's would roar right over my house. Also on Armed Forces day 1950 I went out to the base and talked to the pilots of 2 new jets, an F84 and an F86. I was about to re: up for flight training when a few days later the No. Koreans invaded So. Korea. After getting dinged in Italy I decided enough of that so thus ended my short hope of being an AAF pilot.

Do you have any memories/comments?

Yeah, see above. I think the museum is terrific and have been a member for a long time.

I was the crew chief of F4E 66-0289 when she was with the 56 TFW at MacDill AFB in Florida back in the 70's. She was known to us as the "Spiirit of 76" our bicentenial bird and carried the 76 logo instead of the wing's patch. I am glad she found a good home at Castle, she was my first of many. One that you don't forget..
