META Tag Generator

I've created a META Tag using Bravenet's META Tag Generator. After creating it, it stated, "The following "META Information" must be copied & pasted into the section of your html document!

I don't have a clue to where the section of my html document. Are they suggesting I paste this META Tag information at the very top of my "code editor" page? If so, I'm also guessing that I should type the words and then paste the "META Information" after the words .

Any response I receive will be GREATLY appreciated!!

Re: META Tag Generator

From your description, you are using the Website Wizard, but we can't tell whether you using a Wizard layout or theme. As Corwings pointed out, meta tags are suppose to go between the and tags in your web pages. If you were using a Wizard layout, you can create proper meta tags by using the "website details" link in the Website Wizard. But if you are using a Wizard theme, the Wizard does not give you access to these tags, so you are stuck inserting them directly into your content areas.

If you are inserting the meta tags directly in your content area, do not bother putting in and tags for the meta tags. This may cause you problems with your pages, because the tags already exist in the automatically generated page. These days meta tags are of limited use anyway. Search engines are using them less and less. Some have stopped using them altoghther. Too many people have been inserting misleading information and have rendered them virtually useless. If you trying to get recognized by a search engine, just have a lot of good content. The search engines will extract the keywords from there.

Thank you VERY much! Yes, I'm trying to get recognized by search engines. I'll take your suggestion and not use META tags.
Thanx !

Re: META Tag Generator

Interesting this one....

Meta Tags can actually be useful but not in the way they used to be.

Meta Tags used to be used by search engines to rank the suitability of pages to a given search term.

As the guy said earlier people abused this by basically flooding the keywords tag and using keywords which have no relevance to the page whatsoever. For example they'd be selling viagra but would have the words Britney Spears as the keywords (I suppose there is some relevance there if you look hard enough).

Google (and a number of other leading search engines) are constantly looking for cheats who abuse their system and so most search engines have algorithms that they use to rank pages.

Google uses a mixture of keyword frequency and links.

Keyword frequency works on the basis that if you writing about a specific topic then you can expect a certain keyword or words to appear a certain percentage of times per 1000 words. (say 10%).

If the keyword is used 100 times in 1000 words then Google would deem that keyword useful. If the keyword was flooded throughout the 1000 words ie someone had typed the word Britney Spears 500 times then Google would rank the page poorly as this is basically attempting to cheat.

Google also looks for links back to your site. If you have 1000 links from other sites to yours then you can expect a good page rank. However if those sites have nothing to do with your subject matter then your rank will drop accordingly. If the page rank of the sites linking to your site is low then you cannot be ranked any higher than the site linking back (based on an average I believe).

So the best way to get a good ranking is to produce quality content and to get links back from quality websites (offer a link exchange).

So how can meta tags still work. well ok they are not used by Google but some search engines use them as part of the keyword frequency and so you can fill up the meta tags with relevant material without displaying it on the screen.

Also some search engines use the descriptions tag as the text displayed when someone searches for your site.
