The Source of Woman’s Power
Primordial Yoruba Mother
Ìyálájà Ileana Alcamo
ISBN 1-890157-41-4

Iya Nla is a primordial integrating force who makes herself available to us as a unified body, mind and spirit. Iya Nla galvanizes the cosmic power of earth (with her staff of Ase), to transform, merge, integrate and resolve opposites to re-establish the communal cosmic balance with all living beings. Iya Nla is the basic and most important force. She is the essence of the source and the core of everything. All aspects of Iya Nla are known as Awon Iya Wa (our mothers), the supporters of the world.

The Great Mysterious Mother:
Iya Nla in many instances has been described as garbed in space or sky clad. In her absolute primordial nakedness, she is free from all covering of illusion. She is nature stripped of “clothes” which symbolizes that she is completely beyond name and form, completely beyond the illusory effects of false perceptions. Her nakedness symbolizes her relationship with the transcendental spirit of nature, a representation of a total open heart to illuminate consciousness, which has been affected by human imagination. Iya Nla is the bright fire of truth, which cannot be hidden by the “clothes” of ignorance.

Women’s Spiritual Power – The Force Of Creativity
The worship of Iya Nla as The Mother, as the source of life and fertility, has primeval
roots. The transformation of this energy into a great Deity of Cosmic power results from
a principle of balance in the universe on a dramatic dimension.
