MAS1 Steel

I am a design engineer for my company and we use MAS1 to make diecast cavities. What I have been told is that this steel is only made in Japan by one company. The material is highly expensive and I am wondering if anyone knows of another place to obtain the steel, preferably in the US.

Re: MAS1 Steel

Jason , Since you referred a Die Casting application, I going out on a limb here and 'assuming' ( I hate to assume because you know what kind of trouble that can get you into ) that maybe MAS could stand for 'Mar-Aging Steel'. This is a steel that is popular in the die casting world. It differs from the more common Hot Work grades of steel in chemistry and heat treating procedures but offers good strength , stability and heat checking characteristics . Im sure any of the steel suppliers of Tool Steels in the U.S. may be familiar with this grade and can offer a comparable /equivalent product ( Timken/Latrobe,Bohler-Uddeholm,Thyssen,Crucible ) to name a few. Re: MAS1 Steel

Jason , after a little investigation , I found that MAS1 is indeed a maraging grade steel made by a company in Japan by the name of DAIDO. This is the same steel company that makes the NAK 55 and NAK 80 grades that are well known in the U.S. Their local distributor is International Mold Steel in Florence, KY. 1-800-625-6653 Mike Biddle Sr. Product Specialist P.C.S.
