Hank Bauer 85

Hank Bauer Passed away this morning at age 85! Hank was a Platoon Sergeant in the 4th Raider Battalion and 4th Marines, 6th Marine Division. Bauer saw action at Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Emirau, and was wounded in the assaults on Guam and Okinawa and was awarded a Bronze Star "V" in both of these actions! Bauer played for the New York Yankees from 1948 - 1959. REST IN PEACE

Re: Hank Bauer 85

My dad, Cornelius "Red" Veldhuis, served with Hank Bauer. After the war, when the Yanks would play the White Sox, Dad would meet with him. He was a little older than Dad. Hopefully this info will help me get some information on Dad's service record. All I know is that he was hit by a hand grenade on April 15, 1945, but was listed as MIA until July of 1945. Somehow communications were messed up and he was really in a hospital. I still have Dad's uniform, a necklace he made from shells as part of his therapy. some photos, postcards, Marine newspaper, etc.

Hope this day finds you well and thank you for the information.
