Do any of you know anything about Corporal Donald "Rusty" Golar? He was killed on the 15th of May, 1945 while carrying someone down from Sugar Loaf Hill. Anything would be fantastic. Thank you, and God Bless.
Semper Fi!
There are a few paragraphs about him in Robert Leckie's book, Okinawa: The Last Battle of World War II, which most large libraries hold. The ISBN number is 0-670-84716-X.
I hope this helps. Despite Golar's heroics, apparently he did not even receive as much as a Bronze Star according to Leckie's account and he died in combat on Sugar Loaf Hill.
I just read the amazing story behind this event. He could be the bravest individual I have yet to read about. He did a lot more than carry a wounded marine down Sugarloaf; he fought with more valor than most. His story is told in "Okinawa" by Robert Leckie.
