Help............Psychology??!!!!

I wonder if anyone can help me??!!

I currently play NWCSL Div 5, but know I can play higher. When I train, I train 2x week in the gym for fitness, I usually do solo court work 2x week and then play games/ matches 2x week. When I'm training (solo or practise games) I feel confident and hit the ball well and play to my strengths, but when I play in league matches I seem to fall apart and play the wrong shots!! Its like I am 2 players!! One player is good when it doesn't count and the other is a nightmare!! If anyone can give me tips to help me improve I would be very grateful!!!!

Re: Help............Psychology??!!!!

It sounds like you tense-up in matches. This hurts your vision, strokes and movement. So you need to try to relax, but still maintain focus and stay alert. You know you can do it, since you play well in practice, it is just a question of finding the trigger during a match. For me, in a pressure situation I often start to worry about losing, and this causes me to tense up. To relax, I let my stomach out (like Budda) and pull my shoulders back a little, pinching my should blades together. This is a very relaxed, upright posture and it is hard to feel stress in this position. It probably sounds more ridiculous the way I have explained it than it really looks. I try to maintain this posture during the point as much as possible. Next I stop thinking about the score and only think about hitting the ball -- watching the two yellow dots and hitting the ball, not for a winner but well enough to stay on or regain the T. The point is to get yourself back into your comfort zone by creating small, managable goals such as regaining the T instead of larger, more abstract goals like winning or what will happen if you lose. These two tricks -- forcing a relaxed posture and only thinking about the next stroke of the ball (and watching those two yellow dots!) -- help me immensely.

Re: Help............Psychology??!!!!

I play in div 1 NWC and suffer the same problem! in div 5 just play regular squash - get the ball to the back and then put it forward. At that level no-one is going to be able to do much about it.

Re: Re: Help............Psychology??!!!!

I am not familiar with the differences between divisions. I would imagine div 1 is similar to A/5.0 in the States? Anyway, the one thing that unites squash players of all levels is that most of us seem to find a way to choke under pressure at one time or other...

Re: Help............Psychology??!!!!

Don't feel so bad - Ricketts just choked himself to a loss in Kuwait against Peter Nicol. He was 10-4 match ball up in the 5th and lost.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...

Re: Re: Help............Psychology??!!!!

Wow! That is something I would do. And it isn't easy to lose up 10-4 PAR.

Re: Re: Re: Help............Psychology??!!!!

Just like to say, massive thanx to everyone who gave me advice!! I tried it last night and won!!!! Beat the guy 3-0!!! It felt like I was hitting a tennis ball and everything was in slow motion!!! Hopefully, this might be the breakthrough I'm looking for!!!!
