John Peter Smyth - 1884 - 1949 Sea Gallantry Medal - Trace his Life

I am trying to find more about a family member John Peter Smyth. Sea Gallantry medal 1939 whilst a lamptrimmer on the Montcalm rescuing crew of the Reindeer off Halifax NS. Born Dungarvan Ireland 1884. Joined Royal Navy when 18 and appears pensioned in 1924. Found Merchant Seaman Records on line and death in Liverpool 1949. Would love to find out what the rest of his life was. Did he marry? Any clues where I could find more about this great great Uncle?
