Campaign against fluoride

Campaign against fluoride

A recent study of five primary schools around Birmingham indicated that 34% of young children had dental fluorosis. Peter Mansfield of The National Pure Water Association (NPWA) tested 200 volunteers in the West Midlands and found that 60% had four times the "safe" level of fluoride in their urine. The NPWA has campaigned against fluoridation for 4 decades. These are some of the their concerns:

The susceptibility of children to toxic substances in water and the environment
The toxicity of fluoride in water
The prevalence of dental fluorosis
Failure to apply the Precautionary Principle
Violations of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union 2000
The junior health minister for England and Wales estimates that 15% more children will have less dental decay because of mass fluoridation. But how many more will have dental fluorosis, and accumulative health problems caused by fluoride? And the chief target group for fluoridation, the less well off, are being deprived of choice, for it is precisely they who will not be able to afford bottled water and filters, to protect their children from a poison more toxic than lead.

The York Review (2000) on the safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation, presented by England’s Department of Health Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (NHS CRD) at York University, states that "48% of children in optimum fluoridated areas worldwide have dental fluorosis and that 12.5% have symptoms of "aesthetic concern." They conclude there is "surprisingly little research" into the harmful effects from fluoride and recommend "high quality research" into fluoride’s possible links with infant mortality, IQ and congenital defects.

Scotland’s devolved parliament pulled the plug on plans to add fluoride to Scotland’s drinking water in November 2004. The first minister said, "We will not be changing the current legislation on fluoridation of the water supply in this parliament. We will however bring forward a range of other measures to improve the dental health of children, especially in their early years."

Re: Campaign against fluoride

Well water good, City water BAD.

Re: what about chlorine?

What can you tell me about chlorine? I know that can't be good!

Chlorine Hazards

"The drinking of chlorinated water has finally been officially linked to an increased incidence of colon cancer. An epidemiologist at Oak Ridge Associated Universities completed a study of colon cancer victims and non-cancer patients and concluded that the drinking of chlorinated water for 15 years or more was conducive to a high rate of colon cancer." Health Freedom News, January/February 1987 "Long-term drinking of chlorinated water appears to increase a person's risk of developing bladder cancer as much as 80%," according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Some 45,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with bladder cancer. St. Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press, December 17, 1987

According to an EPA report, nine U.S. chlorine factories are among the nation's largest sources of mercury, one of the most hazardous and ubiquitous contaminants. Emissions from these chlorine factories and power plants travel thousands of miles in the air and drop into oceans and lakes, building up in the tissues of animals, such as seafood products and people.

In fact, in 2002, chlorine factories each reported emitting an average of 1,097 pounds of mercury into the air, five times more than the average power plant.
"Missing" Mercury Concern.

A major concern highlighted in the report centered on the "long-overlooked" source of mercury polluting the air. It seems much of the mercury these nine chlorine plants release into the environment each year is largely unknown and unaccounted for in the companies' annual inventories. While emissions from smokestacks and vents are measured with great accuracy, fugitive emissions (unmonitored leaks from the mercury vats) are difficult to measure.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been working with the chlorine industry to resolve the mercury issue: It has been suspected that the "missing mercury" is trapped inside the plants' piping, tanks and processing equipment, rather than being polluted into the environment.

Though regardless of where the unaccounted mercury is being emitted, mercury pollution remains a concern in the United States:

One in every six babies, which is more than 600,000 a year, is born to a mother with a mercury level over what is regarded safe for a fetus

Mercury is known to interfere with brain development

The FDA has advised pregnant women or women who are nursing or may become pregnant to avoid eating large marine predators including: swordfish, shark, tilefish and king mackerel and to not exceed more than 12 ounces of other fish per week

If you really enjoy the taste of fish, you may want to consider wild Pacific salmon. It isn't the easiest salmon to find as most salmon is farmed Atlantic salmon. If you have trouble finding it we have tested a brand of Alaskan Wild Red Salmon from Vital Choice, several times now and have found it to be free from mercury contamination and the toxic substances listed above.

Re: Campaign against chlorinated water, then!

Hey Waterboy, that was more than enuf stuff to chew on for now. No salmon form me thanks, Ima vegan.
Now I gotta find who I can write to, to protest the mercury pollution.

Re: Campaign against fluoride

and in other another world....

RESOLUTION REGARDING FLUORIDATION OF PUBLIC WATER

WHEREAS, fluoridation chemicals have not been approved as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration for introduction into food products for consumption;

WHEREAS, introduction of fluoridation chemicals into the water supply will result in the accumulation of fluorides on properties of commercial farmers who utilize water from the county water systems. These fluoride compounds are considered hazardous waste and daily addition of these compounds via the public water system to commercial farming properties are of concern;

Now therefore, be it resolved that Hawaii Organic Farmers Association opposes the addition of fluoride to Hawaii’s water and supports any legislation to permanently ban fluoridation of the water supply.
