arching of granular materials in silos

dear sir,

I have founfd your website very interesting as i am dealing with a project related to granular material. My name is leonidas Lazarakis, a diploma student in the Architecrtural Association School of Architecture, London. Recently I have been sponsored by my university on a research trip in S.America in relation to grain storage and infrastructure. I am increasingly interested in granular material and their self organising processs, particularly within hoppers/silos. The arching of the grain is of particular interest and i have certain questions about the behaviour of the material:

I want to find out the relationship and explanation of arch formations

in granular materials or silo.

1.relationship between arch height and angle of repose of silos

2.relationship between arch size and silo openings

3.relationship bewtween number of arches and silo angle of repose,

height etc.

simple formulas are also welcome

I am not interested in a computer models,as this will not help me

understand the arch formation, but i am interested in finding a

relation of proportions, simple rules of thumb or equations. i have

found net publications which do not clarify the arch proportions so i

am not interested in net publications unless they directly answer my

question.

Any answers will begreatly appreciated,

kind regards,

Leonidas Lazarakis
