Two Lionel 28227 UP SD70 MAC locomotives sold for more than $700 each in separate eBay auctions in July. The MSRP for the 28227 was $429 when released in 2004, but some of the largest dealers sold them for $350 - $385. Were the two eBay auctions aberrations, or is current demand driving up the value of the 28227's? Is the UP-Lionel licensing dispute a factor?
That is interesting. I have absolutely no data on this engine. Is it possible that we have our first rising price in many years as far as new Lionel is concerned?? That would be something different.
The latest 28227 auctioned on eBay was a Like New piece that went for $510 last night. While still more than the $429 2004 MSRP, with only 5 bidders and no snipes, appears to be not quite as hot an item as indicated by the July auctions. Perhaps testosterone or shill bidding pushed the previous bids higher.
