A thought...
Is the problem happening when you are re-listing auctions that closed without a buyer?
If so - after you re-list, are you deleting the closed auction?
I'm guessing that the pictures are being deleted with the expired auctions when you delete them. If these guesses are valid, I would suggest that you DO NOT delete the closed auctions after you re-list them.
