NFL All-Convicted Offensive Team

These are my picks for Offensive All-Convicted. Defense coming later.

Criteria: convicted, pled guilty, or pled no contest, to a crime that is more than reckless driving, marihuana possession, or disorderly conduct. Also, player must have had more than just an average career in the NFL, so Lawrence Phillips (pleaded no contest to assaulting a woman, guilty of seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon) was an outstanding college player, but was unproductive in NFL, so he does not count.

My choices are on quality of career with slight weighting on seriousness of crime. I am by no means an expert on football; I do not follow fantasy leagues etc. Many will find fault with my selections, but that is fine as I think that this is just a jumping-off point for a final list. Even my criteria call be challenged, although I think the criteria is fair.

Most of my information comes from the San Diego Union-Tribune website: http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/nfl/arrests.html

Quarterback. Not many candidates:

• Jake Plummer (no contest to four counts of sexual abuse)
• Brian Griese (pleaded guilty to driving while impaired)
• Jeff Garcia (pleaded guilty to DUI)

Have to go with Garcia over a close Plummer on this one. Of course if Vick is convicted, then he immediately takes over.

Running Backs: Wow...lots to choose from. Note that running backs seem to have a problem with hitting and shoving women. Occupational hazard?

• Corey Dillon (probation for fourth-degree assault on his wife)
• Ahman Green (arrested after an alleged domestic violence incident; 100 hours community service)
• Dominic Rhodes (charged with domestic abuse; Diversion program)
• Larry Johnson (Charged with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor domestic battery; Diversion program, 120 hours community service)
• Michael Pittman (pled guilty to three separate various domestic violence charges; nineteen days in jail)
• Lance Rentzel (plead guilty to felony indecent exposure to 10 year old female)
• Fred Lane (Arrested on drug and weapons charges
• Byron "Bam" Morris (drug trafficking, 30 months of prison)
• Mike Sellers (pled guilty to two separate DUI, one with felony drug possession)
• Jamal Lewis (Pled guilty to using a cell phone to set up drug deal; four months in prison)

Have to go with Jamal Lewis as best of the lot and Michael Pittman as the second with the many arrests and convictions. Naturally, if O.J. ever is convicted of anything, then Pittman is benched.

Wide receivers. Again, many fine candidates:

• Andre Rison (pled guilty to passing bad checks totaling $158,00, theft of a $1000 tape recorder, and giving false information to a police officer)
• Chris Henry (arrested and pled guilty to numerous minor charges, jailed for providing alcohol to three teenage girls)
• Koren Robinson (pled guilty and 90 days in jail for felony fleeing)
• Michael Irvin (no contest to cocaine possession)
• Rae Carruth (serving 18 years for conspiracy murder)
• Lamar Thomas (Arrested and jailed for attacking his pregnant fiancée with a deadly weapon)

And the selections: Andre Rison on the strength of 5 pro bowls and a great career.

The other is difficult. Michael Irvin is a Hall of Famer with a conviction of a minor drug charge, while Rae Carruth had only an excellent rookie year but is serving 18 years. I go with Irvin not only for his talent but his other arrests and for his screw-ups while working for ESPN.

Tight End. Not many to choose from:

• Dwayne Carswell (guilty of simple battery, domestic violence and obstruction of an officer after a fight with his girlfriend)
• Randy McMichael (Charged with simple battery and criminal trespass in Grovetown, Ga., stemming from an apparent domestic dispute. Pled guilty to criminal trespass, 90 days probation)

I pick McMichael

Offensive Tackles. A real dearth of candidates. Only two to pick from, so they both get it:

• Brad Hopkins (pled guilty to domestic assault)
• Bryant McKinnie (One of four Vikings charged with indecent conduct, disorderly conduct and lewd or lascivious conduct on a party boat; pled guilty to disorderly conduct) I know that this violates my criteria, but the incident was so wonderfully notorious that he gets in. Plus there are no other eligible candidates that I can think of.

Offensive Guards: again, only two candidates:

• Marco Rivera (no contest DUI)
• Eric Steinbach (charged with boating under the influence; diversion program and fine) This one violates my criteria because he was not convicted or pled guilty. However, he did pay a fine and entered a diversion program. There were no other candidates and he is an excellent player, so he gets in.

Center: Only one candidate, but what a nominee!

• Barret Robbins. (Pled guilty to attempted murder) Two pro bowls. Excellent center. He would have won even if there had been ten candidates.
