squirrel damage to trees

We have peeling bark on the limbs of our maple trees. I have found several websites which say this may be squirrels. Anyone have any ideas about preventing (other than extermination) and repairing damage?

Re: squirrel damage to trees

Hi,

It seems likely that the damage you describe was caused by squirrels. As for preventing/reducing the damage, short of killing the perpetrators, you could try using a taste deterrent, but that would need reapplying after rain. Try cayenne pepper or tabasco sauce!!
