Bagged Hardknott and Wrynose Passes on my Effusion!
I have done it and bagged two of England’s toughest climbs! On Sunday I woke up at 05:00 it was raining there was a thunderstorm so the ride was aborted, however yesterday when I woke up it was cold but I decided to go for it! Ironically I felt the climb over Wrynose Pass at 25% gradient was tougher than the 30% (or 1 in 3) of Hardknott. Maybe it was because I had time to improve my steep climbing technique. Because the climbs were tackled early in the morning, and there were no cars or other vehicles in the way I was able to use the entire width of the road and get to the tops of these passes without having to get off and push the bike. On the return over Wrynose I started to feel week and I had to stop for a Mars bar, however I was determined that this mountain road was not going to beat me. The climb was worth it just for the views and wildlife, however it is really satisfying to have now bag both of those climbs even if I did use my Granny ring on this bike for the first time!

Hi, Well I am doing The Fred Whitton Challenge this Sunday on my Esprit and I will be hitting both the Hardknott abd Wrynose this Sunday but after many other passes and 100 miles, I hope to be able to make it up without shoes hitting the tarmac. Will keep you posted Bri

Brian, I would love to do the Fred Whitton Challenge, but I along with many others are shut out of this event because of the entry limit. I find it ironic that along the route on Sunday there will be advanced road closure signs for a running event, however there is still appears to be a significant problem allowing large cycle sportive events! It is such a pity that the road between Eskdale and Langdale Valley cannot be closed for this event. Just two years ago these climbs would have been well beyond my capabilities, so I am excited that I have achieved this feat. Maybe next year?

Three of us did an unofficial Fred Whitton last June and boy what a ride! I am a fan of the Lakes and enjoyed eveery minute of it! Couldnt quite manage Hard knott after 100 miles - got baulked by a car as I was struggling at 4 mph... In a restaurant in Ambleside we were being presented with chocolate medals to honour the event when the waiter reveals he completed it in just over 7 hours!! Put it all inperspective really |

Hi again, well that is the Fred Whitton challenge done and dusted. I completed the event in 7hrs 5min plus time for stops to dib the dibber pllus re-fuel so total time was 7hrs 30min on my Esprit and it was so comfy over the rough surface and i heard others moaning about the road surface..he he to ti owners. I managed up the hardknott after all in 34/25 gear as many struggled to push up the hill and i saw another Enigma on the climb also being pushed, pity we both could not ride up as a pair, one guy in a polka dot jersey asked about my Esprit as he is an owner of an Omega and i told him the customer service is great. So all in all i was very happy with my ride and the joy of Ti is now fully justified. bri |

Brian, All I can say is that I am impressed and that I calculate that I would have to add at least another hour and fifteen minutes to your time. Are you planning to do the Phil and Friends ride in August?
