Esprit - first ride

I finally finished building up the Esprit frame that I purchased last month and couldn't resist the temptation to to take it out for a spin this morning through the rolling countryside of east Leicestershire, taking in some of the roads that are in the East Midlands Cicyle Classic in April. The roads were mostly dry although in places they were still a bit damp from overnight rain/dew. The bike rides like a dream, takes hills with ease and is *very* fast and comfortable.

I should have known better than to take this dream machine out in the winter though, as on a right turn 15 miles from home I must have hit an exceedingingly slippery piece of road (slightly damp mud I think it was) and the bike suddenly lost grip and I fell into my right side
Not only did I graze my elbow hip and knee, but I scuffed the bartape on the right side of the bars, put a nice scuff on the side of right SRAM shifter/brake and bent the rear mech hanger ( only very small mark on the side of the SRAM force rear mech though ) .

After picking myself up I inspected the damage. Luckily the frame was unmarked . I managed to bend the rear mech hanger back enough to be able to use the gears well enough to get home, although it wasn't perfect.

Once home I took the hanger off to inspect it. I have bent it back enough to get quiet operation of through the gears, although I had to slightly reset the high and low limiters on the rear mech, so it still can't be perfectly straight.

Jim- how much for a new hanger?

Sod's law isn't it - appart from a a fall on ice in December I haven't come off my bike for nearly 3 years

Re: Esprit - first ride

Hello David,

That's rotten luck! It's bad enough falling off at all but falling off a brand spanker of a new bike!

We will send you a replacement gear hanger with our compliments.

Re: Esprit - first ride

There but ..... although I'm not sure I'd have been brave enough to post the news ....

Finally got mine together on Saturday but so far have only ridden it round the corner and back to check the necessary adjustments. So far, so good - roll on the next fine day :-)

Re: Esprit - first ride

Thanks a lot Jim. The scuffs on the shifter/brake luckily aren't too bad and the one scuff on rear mech is on a corner and is so neat it almost looks like it was designed like that! Thanks to your generosity I'm only having to fork out a few quid for some new bar tape (Can't really justify spending £200 on new shifters just because of some scuffing!) As I explained to my wife, after seeing the large grazes on my body, I don't care about these- they will heal- unlike the grazes to my bike.
