Enigma quick releases

When I saw these I was amazed - 38g is REALLY light weight! I'm really interested in treating myself and getting some, but does anyone else here have experience with them who can give some advice?

How strong/fragile are they? Are they intended for several seasons of everyday training use, or just for a hillclimb "show bike"? I'm only talking about road use, but I might hit the odd pothole from time to time.

Re: Enigma quick releases

Sorry, I put a reply in, but I mustn't have done it properly (I am the same guy as who wrote the first post earlier)

Basically, the QRs that came with my Neutrons are solid - I've used them for six years and tens of thousands of miles, with some shocking weather and they still work as well as when I first got them.

However, they're each as heavy as a pair of Enigma skewers.

Can I expect the Enigma Skewers similar to be in their longevity, or are they more of a semi-disposable item that gets replaced every few years?

Re: Enigma quick releases

Anyone? Someone here must have used these QRs, or else maybe the Enigma people have something to say?

I'm lightening my racing bike ready for next year, and these QRs could really cut a chunk of weight off!

Re: Enigma quick releases

I've got them on my Esprit and they work fine, although I haven't had them long enough to assess long term durability. They have a nice positive action. You're aware when you are using them that they're probably not as bombproof as a bigger, heaver set and I think it's important to spend a little longer adjusting the tension just right - I suspect they have tighter tolerances than your average QR and you can feel this when you're using them, but I'd describe them as precise rather than delicate. They have a quality feel about them and look great and so far I've had no reason to swap them for the hulking great things that came with my wheels

Re: Enigma quick releases

Hello Jim H,

We really prefer to let our customers air their opinions on the forum. However considering the lack of response to your particular question I will tell you what I think about our ti skewers. I have used them for the last year without any problems. To be honest I am no longer the slim athletic young thing I was when I was racing at 25, instead I am a 14 stone middle-aged bike rider. However I think I can still put a fair bit of oomph through my back wheel and the skewers haven't budged at all however much I've pushed. I hope this helps you.

Jim

Re: Enigma quick releases

There was some discussion of these on weightweenies some time back. Have a search on the site to find it.

Re: Enigma quick releases

Thnx Brian,
I found the WW site last night but didn't fancy trawling through the forum..... I couldn't find the search button..... but found it tonight

@ rsmith.... sorry if my last post came across as a tad grumpy but I'd just spent 3hrs trying to fit new mudguards to my winter bike

Re: Enigma quick releases

I got the QRs today - they are pretty nicely made! Time will tell for their durability, but the movement is really smooth (although one was a bit stiff)

In the past I've mostly used Campy and Shimano QRs, and normally I turn the nut until the closing action starts to feel resistance with the lever stuck straight out (hopefully it is clear what I mean)

I've quickly tried the Enigma QRs. If I turn them so the resistance starts with the lever straight out, I have to push the lever really hard to get it to go in at all. Then again, it might just feel hard because the lever surface is so small so there is more pressure on my hand.

This is kind of embarising to have to ask, but could I have some pointers in closing these QRs.

Regards,
Jim
