Paignton Weekend

Hello, I just wanted to take the opportunity to say a BIG THANK YOU to all those who organsied the weekend. It was excellent . I didn't go from the hotel, the weather wasn't too good but the facilities and workshops made up for it.

As a single at the event I was a little disappointed that so many chose to stay with a fixed partner, I enjoy the social aspect of dancing. I guess it just gave me the confidence to ask the men for a dance instead, and to be fair I was only declined once.

I really enjoyed the whole weekend, it has inspired me to continue. Look forward to dancing with you again (be warned gents you will be approached)

Re: Paignton Weekend

As one of those who opted to stay with a fixed partner for much (though not all)of the time during workshops, I can see the other side of the coin.

My wife and I both rotate in normal classes, and we both enjoy the social side of dancing too. However, as we've just started doing dance competitions we wanted to practise some of the new moves together so we could work on the finer details as well as the "big picture". Also, when more difficult moves and techniques are being taught, there's less chance of either of us getting hurt if we stick together. There was a very wide range of ability represented in the workshops, from almost total beginners to those who've been dancing for years, and to do some things you really need to be with a partner whose ability you trust, especially when it comes to some of the drops and "flash moves" that were taught. I know from experience that leading a difficult move with an inexperienced partner can hurt or cause injury, and as my wife would no doubt tell you, the risk is often even greater for the lady who is dropped by an inexperienced guy.

As I said, we wouldn't normally stay as a fixed couple in classes, but the weekend's workshops were a bit of a special case. When it came to the evening freestyles, however, I was quite happy to dance with anyone and have a bit of fun (even with Rob, though he's not as pretty as most of the other partners I danced with!)

As far as asking us guys to dance goes, you're doing the right thing. Ask me to dance any time - I very rarely refuse unless I have a good reason, and even then it's usually a postponement rather than an outright refusal.

Re: Paignton Weekend

Eleanor - apologies if it was my husband who refused you - I know on the Saturday night at the end of the dance he was feeling bad about refusing a dance, but he's just finished his course of antibiotics for a chest infection and even I didn't get that many dances out of him over the weekend!!

Other than that, it was an absolutely fantastic weekend and we really enjoyed ourselves - we'll certainly be there next year!!

Understand...

thanks for the replies, I too can see both sides for this, and so for the more complex moves I too would want to dance with someone I knew and trusted. So again, thank you all for dancing with me.
